C3 radiographic film acc. to EN 584-1

As many radiographers know the EN 584-1 standard distinguishes few radiographic film classes. Of coure film manufacturers have comply to the specification of the standard and thare can be several ways to obtain the C3 film class. In our laboratory we use Fuji IX 80 films and the manufacturer states that the film obtains C3 class if the development temperature is 26 deg C. If the temperature equals 28 deg C the film class is C4 ass to EN 584-1. There are some dificulties in getting the appropriate sensivity (it's hard to get the appropriate wire of the IQI - usually one is missing). We've tryied many solutions with other parameters of the examination i.e. voltage, time, screens, distance and many other...

The question apperas are we using the right film type? (of course it is C3 according to the producer). Maybe it would be advisable to change the film manufacturer to e.g. AGFA and this way the sensivity would increase? I don't state that the IQI wire is impossible to obtain on this film system (film and developer) but it usually is quite a hard task. Maybe You had the same problem and it has vanished after changing the film manufacturer?

We use IX80 Fuji films packed in a ruber cassette with 0,05mm front screen and 0,1mm rear lead screens

hi
to get better sensitivity the recommended front lead screen 0.1mm to 0.2 mm in the range

Dear Sadek,
we at BAM are doing NDT film system classifiction and certification for differerent film manufacturers. Fujifilm does not have BAM certificates. Our measurements showed since many years, that the Fujifilm IX 50 in standard NDT development conditiions (28 °C and 8 min cycle time) is in the C3 film system class and IX 80 is in the C4 system class. Of course, you can find development conditions (e.g. the weak Japanese Fujifilm Superdol developer at 25 °C and 11 min cycle time) which require longer X-ray exposure times to reach D=2. As a consequence, the IX80 film just imps in tyhe next class C3! But this are NOT the con ditions you find typically in Europe.
So, if you are searching for a C3 film system class I strongly recommend to use the Fujifilm IX50 type. Than you will also prevent any problems with the wire visibility, which should be very similar to AGFA D4 films.
If you are using X-rays for exposure, the lead screen thicknesses are sufficient, if you are using Ir-192 the suggested increased lead thicknesses should give better IQI visibilities.
Finally, are you aware that since 2012 EN 584 is no longer valid and replaced by ISO 11699?
Best regards
Uwe Z.

ISAFE3 Intrinsically Safe Sensor System

ISAFE3 intrinsically safe sensor system of Vallen Systeme is especially targeted at the petrochemica
...
l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
