The impact of removing excess welding metal

Hello Gents

In order to be able to have Ultrasonic reading of weld thickness over a nozzle, we removed the the Excess weld metal without touching the parent metal to have a straight contact between the UT probe and the weld metal
Question: is this removing of Excess weld metal affect negatively the integrity of equipment being tested or not

Thanks for advice me
Regards

Tariq, blending the excess weld cap metal to the parent metal is generally considered an improvement of the situation. Any stress riser effect at the transition is then removed. In some structures you will even find that the engineering drawings "require" removal of excess weld metal when the component is subject to cyclic loading.

Reinforcement is not intended to be part of the design thickness and in many codes is supposed to be removed to aide high quality NDE so your removal should not be an issue,

One should look at AWS D1.1 and the usage of both weld toe grinding and weld toe hammer peening lg

Hi Tariq,

Here Engineering ordered do not touch the Crown in order to "increase" the life for a structure under cyclic load....the main issua is lack of penetration and lack of fusión at the root...and the results shows that the structure will have 30 years guaranty ...

ISAFE3 Intrinsically Safe Sensor System

ISAFE3 intrinsically safe sensor system of Vallen Systeme is especially targeted at the petrochemica
...
l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
