olympus cobra probe with longitudinal wave wedge for small size SS inspection issue

hi everyone.

we are now have a tough job on hand that is inspect the SS, INCONEL, HIGH ALLOY STEEL in size with 1-3in which thickness from 3-15mm by PAUT. now we are trying use the cobra probe with 60degree longitudinal wave wedge, but we found the noise from the wedge is too big(from 20mm UT cursor) and it means that can inspect the thickness maximum is 7-8mm, what my questions:
1. does any experienced technician has ever done the job like this, so please suggest us which wedge we should use, 60degree or 85degree? to save our money and time.
2. now we are testing 60degree Longitudinal wave wedge , we are in urgent, please if have any good suggestions.

Hi Mr. Jacky,

In the picture you have shown, from the equipment display it is clear that you have not yet done calibrations and the indication what you got is while you are keeping your probe in air...

In my experience, these are general noise echoes which can be suppressed once you keep your probe on the material. If still exists, then check your cable connections and remove your wedge and clean them put sufficient couplant before connecting the wedge...

as you see the new picture even we put the probe on the specimen, noise still occur, this make us can not high thickness inspection maximum 10mm, but we have 15mm maximum pipe. this is the first problem. secondly, i wondering that if we can change to 85 degree wedge to reduce the noise because i checked the noise is from the wedge surface, we need increase the incident angle in the wedge to reduce reflection according to snell's law. but i am not sure the performance with 85degree wedge on specimen, if you have any good suggestions?

Hi jacky,

If u see the two pictures clearly,in first pict noise echoe @ 37 dB it was saturated
second one, @ 41 dB it is suppressed but not eliminated.

Any way give a try with CS block whether you are observing the same issue or not...?

For what purpose you procured this probe, if you specifically procured for this job then you should have consulted with your vendor and should have asked them to give you a demo.

In this situation even if you overcome this noise issue, it is not possible to cover entire weld volume in a single leg with this setup.

I suggest DMA-TRL probes for SS and Inconel welds which can possibly cover your weld with l wave and creep wave in single leg with improved SNR where as your 60 deg wedge cannot.
