hardness rang

Dear sirs,
I have been measuring the hardness of A335 gr P9 for several time by equotip 550 leeb D and always the range is between 85 to 110 HB. my question is that what should be the hardness above mentioned metal by this method? It seems that this range is remarkable less than we expect for this metal.

Dear Majid,
are you aware of the limitations of portable hardness testers? In particular rebound hardness devices?
Before we would make any further comment please tell us a bit more about the product you are performing the hardness test.
For example is it a pipe, what is the surface condition?

I agree with Mr. Neil Burleigh. There are some limitations for the echo tip hardness tester working on rebound principle.

As requested Please give the information of the product that you are working including section thickness etc.

It will not work ( gives ridiculously low values) if the section thickness is low like in some pipes etc.

Hardness measuring principle is based on the dynamic (rebound) and the product specification is:

Pipe: 5"- A335 Gr P11
length: 12 m
thickness: 6.5 mm
surface roughness: > 15 µm

Dear Mr. Majid

As others already mentioned, the thickness is the problem in your case. For the Leeb D impact device a minimum thickness of 25mm is recommended. As your pipe has only 6.5mm you get the low readings.

For this application I would recommend you to use an UCI instrument. For this 5mm thickness is enough. As you already have an Equotip 550, there is the option to purchase the UCI probe only which can then be connected to your Equotip 550, please check here: https://www.proceq.com/compare/equotip-portable-hardness-testing/

Dear Majid,

As I suspected, this pipe has a lower thickness of 6.5 mm and this hardness tester will not work for these thicknesses.

You have to use other methods like portable Ultrasonic hardness tester etc.
