Sean

In 1986 The Welding Insitute, on behalf of the International Institute of Welding, produced a 50 page A5 booklet entitled "Evaluation of ultrasonic signals". This dealt exclusively with signals from flaws in welds.

Of particular interest are 7 pages of diagrams depicting typical echodynamic patterns expected from different flaw types. Its objective was to assist the operator to "..make an estimate of a defect's through-thickness size, even for very small defects."

Perhaps TWI still have them in stock.

Hello Sean,

the following standard may help to evaluate moving ultrasonic signals:
ISO 16827:2014, Non-destructive testing - Ultrasonic testing - Characterization and sizing of discontinuities.

This standard is also a European Standard: EN ISO 16827.

With best regards
