NDT Testing on Economizer Tubes (U bend)

Hi Everyone ,

Hope everyone has started their new year well, in good health and with good expectations !

I would like to inquire whether anybody has any recommendations of what method of NDT to imploy for testing the interior of inservice economizer tubes ( just the U bend ), from the exterior.

The client experienced a tube leak on one of their tubes. They assume it resulted from very small internal pits. We have a sample of the U bend, Evidentally there are very apparent small individual and grouped pits. However, the smallest is 1mm.

OD: 40mm - 50mm
Material : Carbon Steel TU 37 C

IRIS and RFET is really out of question.

Does anyone suggest Phaysed Array ?

Thanks Guy's

You can use Olympus FlexoFORM Scanner and probe for Small-diameter elbows or pipes from 1.3 in. OD up to 4 in. OD. see link https://www.olympus-ims.com/en/scanners/flexoform/#!cms[tab]=%2Fscanners%2Fflexoform%2Fscanning-option

Hello Rory,

For an automated scanning solution (external), a magnetic crawler with a reciprocating rack may be suitable for mapping the geometry (please see attached image).

Although an internally deployed probe may not be your preferred approach, there are solutions to deploy probes internally via an inspection stub rather than cutting into the header; see link for more info ...

Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry (APR) shall be used for such inspection of economizer tubes that has multiple bends . APR uses only sound waves abs hence its material and configuration independent . For more info : visit www.talcyon.com

Rory,

I don't know how much access you have to the area of inspection, but simply wiping down the tubes with a solvent and applying a coat of developer could do the trick assuming the tubes are filled with fluid. Just a taught.

Hi,
Can you have a try profile RT with few difference directions to see if there is internal pitting?

l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
