Reading your request I First thought: Typical question to be answered in the famous Josef Krautkramer - Book "Ultrasonic Testing of Materials" He had put some nice graphics and thumb rules in his book, which I always used in my UT-Lessons.

Next - reading the link to this older post of Ed. Ginzel referencing Ermolov made me think: You should use CIVA simulation software to get the full insight into this topic.
