ut of carbon steel shaft
Please can somebody suggest me to do UT of carbon steel shaft size of 320 dia and 4200 length. I have been told by UT inspector level 2 straight beam transducer never be used for crack detection it is only used for lamination or thickness. Is it so.
Shaft can be inspected radially and axially with straight beam or angle beam transducer.

for the in-service inspection for fatigue transverse cracks the sensitivity setting is based on the detection of standard saw cut made from the rounded surface of the shaft at rectangle to the axis, the depth of the saw cut for each area of the shaft is defined by the local procedures and regulations, for example for the same type of railway car shaft - wheel-seat area - the depth may vary from 0.5 to 3 mm in different countries
