Penetrant Testing DEVELOPER

Let me know whether it is recommended to apply Developer in DPT by Brushing Method?

It would help to know your process details, whether you are following a standard, and why brush application is proposed (it would not be typical). What developer form are you considering? I assume you are not thinking of dry powder or water soluble forms (poor indication contrast against the specimen surface for color contrast (dye) penetrant), but that still leaves water suspendible and nonaqueous forms.

Yes because if you brush you will take some penetrant out with it and are some type of line formation due to bristles.
and what about light uniform coating? you will get non uniform coating.

Aravind,

Form b, c, and d developers are wet developers. For obvious reasons, you cannot brush these developers because you will streak the penetrant from an indication or streak any residual penetrant left on the surface after rinsing. You basically compromise the what the indication is because you pulled the penetrant out and streaked it across the surface area. It will create a lot of background and make it impossible to perform a high quality inspection.

Form a developer cannot be brushed either for the same reasons as mentioned above, but you can dip and drag it. But even then, this isn't a practical way of applying dry developer as it is meant to be applied in a dust chamber.

We have found dredging (dip and drag) works exceedingly well for surface cracks on small parts. If our cloud chamber method produced 10/1 signal to noise ratio, then the dredging produced 20/1. Especially good at finding fine tight cracks. However, every method has a down side. You must control penetrant contaminating the dry powder in the dredging box.

We're getting away from OP's original question, but your observations mesh well with a number of past studies. Quantitative assessment of indication luminance (brightness) showed doubled (or more) brightness was common with dip/drag technique versus other dry powder application methods. I would be curious if you had also tried isopropanol-based NAWD (form D), as those studies suggested that this variant could be even more sensitive than dip/drag dry powder.
