ASME B31.1 - 2018 Acceptance Criteria

Gentlemen,
I have a question for discussion: - ASME B31.1 revision 2018 indicates in Figure O-8-1 for Surface and Subsurface Indication in its acceptance criteria, the values ​​of 2a and 2d for discontinuity height. However in tables O-9-1, 0-9-2 and O-9-3 refer to a value "h". I'm understanding that the value h is the same as 2a or 2d (total height) and not the half valeu "a" or "d". Am I right? Opinions are welcome.

Manfred, your assumption is correct. I am guessing it was NDT technicians not familiar with traditional fracture-mechanics engineering that prompted the change from the traditional "a" and "2a" terminology.

Thanks Ed. It doesn't make much sense with the notes in the figure. If the sketch shows 2a / 2d, why indicate h in the note?

This would probably have come out of the way in which Code Case 181.2 was developed. CC181.1 used the traditional format and CC181.2 changed to the technician's version so both notations have been used in ASME publications.

Hi,

Mentioning the 2a, 2d is for grouping purpose (Yes they are derived from CC 181)

But mentioning h (height) commonly to avoid confusion for Aspect ratio, which is related with acceptance criteria

So 2a, 2d is for grouping purpose and h is for acceptance criteria.
