Compairing of RT UT Results

Dear Friends,
Whats Your Action When a Weld Seam is Accepted By UT But Not Accepted By RT or Vice Versa.Suppose Both Test Accomplished Acc. to ASME & You Are Free For Test Selection.

Regard,

If you choose to perform RT or UT on a weld and it is found to be rejected, then it is rejected. You cannot buy off an indication with another method after it is rejected. If the first test showed it to be acceptable, then why would you use another method?

RT and UT are complementary testing methods, that is, each one covers an area of weakness of the other. It is very possible to have flaws on a specimen that would be easily detectable by one method and completely missed by the other (one clear and easy example is laminations on a steel plate). UT would pick these up easily but RT would not detect anything.

If the quality control system allows for choosing either the RT or UT method, the criteria for so choosing should be based on the applicability of such method to the weld joint geometry and other considerations of that nature. In this "either/or" case, the results of the selected test are final. If the test shows rejection, then rejection it is, and if it shows acceptance, then acceptance it is.

In a case where both tests are required, then if any test shows rejection then rejection it is. In other words, if both tests are required, the part would have to pass both tests in order to be accepted.

Hope this helps,
Juan Amado

When you have chosen your desired inspection method i.e. RT / UT, codes do not allow you to inter change. This principal is carried through in the inspection once a repair is effected, the same technique as that initially used, must be used to re examine that weld.
