UT inspections of large castings and austenitic steel

What techniques are available to inspect (volumetric) coarse grain
material,such as castings and austenitic steels, with a thick cross
section? Examples where this material would be used is in the
primary loop of nuclear power stations, and in pipe work in the
petrochemical industry.

Depends on the material and what type of inspection but in general Ultrasonic inspection of CSS components has been unreliable. Your best bet is a low freqency focused dual L wave 3/4 or 1 meg for crack detection

I have no first hand experience with them, but Krautkramer, and a few others, were pushing "composite transducers" as a solution to inspecting noisy materials.

As I recall, this site had some on-line articles about them back in the fall of '96.

Sir,

Dual element critically refracted longitudinal waves have been used for such applications for years. They are mentioned in IIW handbook on the examination of austenetic welds.

Further there are more detailed papers on dual element and tandem techniques published by RTD and Panametrics.
