Sound velocity in water

Does anybody have any information about how to determine sound velocity in water at elevated teperatures. Temperatures would be greater than the boiling point at atmospheric pressures.

How hot? In what sort of container? In general, the way we usually measure sound velocities in liquids is to put the stuff in a test cell with parallel walls and measure the transit time across the resulting fixed sound path between the inside walls of the container. The transit time measurement can be done with any one of a number of ultrasonic instruments. Maybe you can provide a few more details about the circumstances of your test.

I have an old copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. There is a section on sound velocity in it. There is even a special item on velocities for water over 212F (100C)

The source is from Acoustical Society of America volume 31, 1959, J.C.McDade, D.R.Pardue, AL Gedrich and F.Vrataric

It is a long list of temperatures and velocities. I will supply a few but you can get the CRC Handbook from any library. Temp I provide in degrees F and Velocity in m/s

At 550 degrees F the velocity they publish is 980m/s

It is really not difficult to measure the sound velocity, unless you don´t need a very high precision (it could be for example important, if you want to measure weak solutions etc.).
For high accuracy measurements you will need equipment with higher time measurement precision as typically used and it could be necessary to compensate the wall effects, diffraction effects etc.
