WHat kind of differences are you taking about? Yu are being very vague.
If you mean velocity differences then you need to use a different calibraiton block for each material.

If its a bonded joint then I suggest you have a test block made of the two materials with an intentional disbond area equivalent in size to the smallest area you wish to detect. Then, using a suitable compression wave probe, you can compare the response from the actual disbond with the reflection occasioned by the different acoustic impedances of the two materials according to the formula given on this page:

Very general I know but you are not giving any details of the test item. Use the excellent UT encyclopaedia on here.

You have still not provided any details of your problem.
Might I suggest that as a starter you could simply use Nigel's list of items as a checklist and provide the details he itemised:
e.g.
Which materials: carbon steel to stainless

relative thicknesses: 3mm stainless to 25mm carbon steel

bonding or joining method: explosive welding

and so on....

Without information on the details no response is possible....There are some situations where ultrasonic testing may not be appropriate or perhaps even there are no NDT options available!

I agree with Ed G. The bottom line however, is you will probabl;y need a calibraiton block for each material or as Ed stated a mock up
