Inspection of Spot Welds was several times discussed in this Forum,
however it is still interesting to discuss what's new.
You may use the Forum Search to find the previous discussions.
Articles can be found with the article power search also.
Anyway, something new was published recently at the annual DGZfP conference May 1999 in Celle.
See below the German abstracts:

Very good information Rolf pointed out. I have some experience with
UT inspection in spot welds. If you need further information let me know.
Regards.

We have scanned spot welds with a short pulse transducer (100 ns pulse length) and it works very good.
We can make a hand-held scanner for this purpose (we have designed and made similiar scanner for investigation of soft palate,
see please: http://www.optel.com.pl/article/english/plate.htm).

The german society for NDT just published the reports of its Annual conference in Celle May 1999.
You may find there a survey on possibilities, entitled:
"Moeglichkeiten der zerstörungsfreien Pruefung von Widerstandspunktschweissverbindungen"

Thanks for Mr. Wuesentberg's hint.
The abstract of this paper he refereed to is available at:
http://www.ndt.net/abstract/dgzfp99/data/7.htm (in German)

We hope to publish this and other full-texts soon.
Maybe also translated to English!

Panametrics has experienced great success in Australia using the Epoch3 for spot weld testing. Our client is currently experiencing correlation to destructive testing in excess of 90%.

you may try the panimetric sonopen. it is small enough to go directly onto the spot and it has a short focal point.

Make sure you have an appropriate pulser and receiver to drive correctly 20 to 25 MHz probes. There are some instruments with almost automatic evaluation.

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field

ISAFE3 Intrinsically Safe Sensor System

ISAFE3 intrinsically safe sensor system of Vallen Systeme is especially targeted at the petrochemica
...
l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
