NDT of Fine Wire

AMS is a contract NDT service company to the automotive safety industry, specifically high volume ultrasonic examination of Airbag canister and inflators. We are currently involved in an R&D program for one of our clients that has brought to us a most unusual problem, at least for us.

The problem is brittle fracture of wire in their ignitors. The wire, or more correctly Bridgewire is used in pyro-technic devices and ordinace explosives. The brigewire is 98% platinum and 2% tungsten. The diameter is 0.00075" (in). Each spool contains an average of 7,000ft and as many as thirty spools are being consumed daily.

Wire that has failed will have a lower tensile <170,000 and low elongation <6%.

I would be interested in knowing if any one on this thread has had any experience with this type of problem?

You might want to contact Sandia's Explosive Technology Group. See http://www.sandia.gov/explosive/labs.htm
It appears they have sufficient expertise in this area to be able to help.

Re: NDT of Fine Wire
Dear Dale,

This looks like a digital radiography solution. One you could radiograph the product with film and then digitally enhance the film to look for the defect.

Or just shoot the parts on a digital plate and then enhance the images to look. We can also use geometric enlargement to images the wires.

Sincerely,

J. Mark Davis
