TOFD on AWS Code

Good day everyone,

Is there any possibility to do TOFD on AWS acceptance criteria. Because AWS acceptance is based on amplitude response whereas TOFD is non-amplitude method.

Is there any code case. Please share with us if anybody have idea or experience.

Thanks & regards,

RT. Jeyakumar

Re: TOFD on AWS Code
Hi,

ASME Code case 2235-9 can be used if you are examining pressure vessels with a thickness over 13 mm. It might not be what you are looking for though because you are talking about AWS (structural)

Re: TOFD on AWS Code
I work on a refinery so I do not refer to AWS on a regular bases, so maybe somebody else can either confirm or add to the following:

You may demonstrate AWS compliance (for TOFD) through Annex K and I believe there will be new technology/techniques coded in the 2006 version.

Re: TOFD on AWS Code
Section 6.36 "Advanced Ultrasonic Systems" mentions both TOFD and Phased Array.

A way forward would be to carry out a Performance Demonstration on a test piece with known defects similar to those expected through the welding process.

If it can be succsessfully demonstrated to the Authorised Inspector or other regulatory body that the Probability of Detection (POD) is high and the defect-sizing capability is accurate, then there should be no reason not to allow the method to be used.

TOFD IS an amplitude method - the strength of the returning amplified signal will determine the grey-scale intensity with which such response is displayed. It may be possible to compare the intensity of a defect indication with that of a known reflector. Where it differs is in the method of sizing of through thickness height, TOFD measuring the time differential between the returning upper and lower tip-diffracted signals. Where defect height measurement is required for manual UT, beam geometry and probe manipulation is used to measure the defect height.
