UT of cast iron at elevated tempratures

Has anyone got any advise for thickness inspections of cast iron valve bodies at elevated temps 280 degrees for example ???

What is the maximum thickness that you need to measure? Generally, the best approach for that test would be to use a high temperature dual element transducers. Cast iron is grainy and produces a lot of scatter noise, but you should be able to measure more than 50 mm/2 inches at 2 MHz with an appropriate instrument.

Some general tips on high temperature ultrasonic testing can be found in the attached application note.

The casting is about 50mm I have run a 2mhz probe over it when cold and found it effective. I was thinking that would be a good way to go sounds like I am on the right track. Will just have to buy a high temp probe.
Emat probes have also been sugested for this aplication.

As an alternative to a dual element high temperature probe (a very good one is the d797 panametrics, but the temperature is critical). I've had excellent results using a 2MHz BB single element with a Vespel delay line with a proper delay.
