How to inspect the rings with UT

hello,Does anyone know how to inspect the forge rings with UT,sometimes we found the cracks on the inner surface or on the port, and the surface is rough, so we can't use MPI or LPI, your advise would be highly appreciated. thank you!

I assume they are quite large steel rings, check out ASTM A388, surface finish is very important for UT. Rings and hollow forgings should be examined with straight beam and angle beam probes (angles, scan surfaces depend on size).
reference blocks with flat bottom holes and notches are usually required although DGS is also allowed in some cases.
If the surface is scaled you have to remove but if the surface has forging die marks you will have to get it machined to gat any useful results from UT. A388 recommends you not exceed 250micro inch unless agreed before hand.
As with many NDT methods, surface finish is critical for a good result.

Depending on the Geometry/access you may find eddy current with an Orthogonal coil probe (as used for weld inspection) worth a try - It is quite tolerant of poor surface finish and or mild scaling

Thank you for your advise,you are right,they are quite large forge rings,the diameter of inner ring is about 1400mm,and the diameter of outer ring is about 1500mm.we would test with UT when we receiving them,
Before we didn't test them, but we found cracks near the surface about 3mm after we machined them.OK
i will check out ASTM A388.
