Inspection of 0.100" O.D bar

Can experienced friend comment on how to inspect such a smaal O.D bar, for surface and internal defects. UT is not easy. ET for surface? Whats best?

Hi Sunny,

Is the bar Ferromagnetic or not?

If it's not, then eddy currents should be OK provided you get the right frequency. Maybe around a few tens of KHz.
If it's Ferromagnetic, then a DC Flux Leakage may be ideal.

Is this a one-off test or for production? If it's one-off and Ferromagnetic, perhaps manual Magnetic Particle Inspection with DC should detect internal defects as well as surface, but you need to ensure your flux is in the right direction for the defects you want to detect.

Regards,

Godfrey Hands

Hi Sunny

As usual, we need more information in order to give an appropriate answer.

What types and size of defects are you looking for? How long is the bar and what material is it?

UT is difficult, but not guided wave UT depending on the above.

Regards,
Tom
