They and their UT pipe support inspection services have been checked by many clients and Shell Global Solutions as the most accurate system with regards to the evaluation of the remaining pipe wall thickness under the support plate. Verkade NDT Services is a Dutch/German Service company, but they perform their services worldwide. Ask for Hans Verkade. Yes you can use GUL to screen pipe supports, whether magentic or non-magnetic doesn't matter. Especially simple supports are straightforward. The key is that, on a long line, you can screen several supports at once. If one is found to be suspicious you can go and do follow-up inspection on that particular one. This is very useful when testing pipes in difficult (or expensive, time-consuming) to access areas, for example overhaed pipe racks. Longitudinally welded supports are also possible but the range is reduced meaning you can screen less supports in one go. More involved interpretation techniques are available to deal with these types of supports. To my knowledge the PST tool and similar ones on the market are just as qualitative as guided waves as they don't give an exact measurement of wall thickness. These systems are mostly transmission based, and welded supports are also more difficult because the support gives rise to a big reflection. I can also see the consistency of transducer coupling when scanning along the support to get the amplitude profile being an issue. I don't know of a truly quantitative technique measuring wall thickness under the support which does not involve lifting the pipe but would be glad to hear if somebody knows of one. Hope this helps. Regards, Tom
