transducer calibration

Periodic calibration of ultrasonic transducers has become an important issue for inspection companies in Sweden.
Does anybody know any commercial equipment for this purpose?

I don't think that it is a question of specific equipment so much as a matter of your test procedure and appropriate calibration control of your test equipment. We qualify transducer performance here using test blocks, pulser/receivers and signal analyzers whose calibration is traceable to a national standard and verified periodically. You could use any reasonable combination of instrumentation and reference standards to gage the performance of a specific transducer. As long as the calibration of your test equipment is documented and controlled, you should be able to reliably track transducer performance over time.

Panametrics and many other transducer manufacturers will retest used transducers under such controlled conditions for a reasonable fee.

There was a paper at the ECNDT'98 about Periodical Verification,
however, not about transducers.

H. Walaszek - CETIM, France.
Periodical Verification of Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors
According to European Standardization.

Abstract (http://www.ndt.net/abstract/ecndt98/461.htm)

This paper at first briefly describes the present state of European standards projects elaborated by working group 2 of
138 technical comitee (EN TC 138 - WG2) and concerning the verification of ultrasonic equipment used in non
destructive testing. The paper higligthts the consequences of this standard projects when it is adopted (forseen in 1998)
on the verification of ultrasonic flaw detectors which periodicity will be at least once e year.

Finally, is given an example of application of standard project, through the description of a prototype of partly automated
system developped by CETIM and enabling verifications in conformity with European standards.

This paper is illustred by an example of performing verification of one of the characteristic parameters of a flaw detector.

es place circumferentially or “around the curve” for applications such as inspection of longseam welds in piping and vessels. Jointly designed by PH Tool and Holloway NDT, the blocks feature side-drilled hole reflectors positioned within novel compound-curves, each with multiple thickness steps. The unique design results in a light and compact form factor, with the largest block weighing just over 15 lbs and spanning just 16 ¾”. Coverage is provided for nominal pipe sizes from 6” to 10” in the small block and 12” to a whopping 56” in the large block. The compound OD curves and multiple wall thicknesses actually exceed ASME requirements, providing exceptional signal response and measurement accuracy. Properly managing beam divergence off the ID and stabilizing beam skew due to probe rocking is essential to maintaining a consistent calibration when inspecting lengthwise on curved surfaces.
