Automation/Sperry US454

Amarillo College has an Automation US454 c-scan immersion scanner which we would like to upgrade. It seems that paper for the pen recorder is hard to obtain, so we would like to record scans on a PC. Can anyone provide guidance for attaching motion encoders or potentiometers.? We could also use recommendations for PC software. For flaw detectors, we can supply Epoch 2002s with analoge gate output, or newer Krautkramer USM 58 or Panametrics units. Since this is not a corporate sponsored project, we are looking to do this upgrade ourselves, rather than purchasing a commercial solution.

Hello Dwight, NDT-Automation has performed many full digital C-Scan upgrades on AI systems like yours. I
notice you stated you would like to do some of the upgrade yourself? We can assist you.

Re: Automation/Sperry US454
I would strongly recommend the Winspect software from UTEX (www.utex.com)

We have sold a few of these in the UK, and used it to upgrade an old electro sensitive paper tank of our own.

Assuming the old sperry tank uses stepper motors and the power supply / driver amplifiers (may need some work here on some older systems) are in good shape all you should need is

PC - Dual monitors recoomended

Winspect software

Motion control card - Galil or similar

A/D card - National Instruments recommended.

Any of the Flaw Detectors should work, but all will probably have a fairly slow update rate - Less of an issue if you are not doing 'production' work so can keep the speed down.

When this becomes an issue we'd happily sell you one of our Masterscan Flaw Detectors, which are much faster..

Good luck

Joe
