Re Iris Inspection Systems

I am a senior techician / analyst for an Inspection company called "Steel Test". Based in South Africa. We have been active in tube inspection for the last 10 years using various techniques Including "IRIS"

WE have through the years used various Iris systems such as the IRIS 9000 , IRIS ulitima and since 1997 the rd-tech tc5700 system.

Both the IRIS 9000 and IRIS Ulima are great for the back up of remote field results in boiler tube inspections "IF" you know what you looking for. We are currently upgrading the soft ware of our Ulima system but this has not been field tested as yet.

The rd-tech system is a complete stand alone system with all data been recorded during inspection. This can then be reviewed and analysed off line. The system is also compact which aids when traveling . We have customers in Southern Africa, Malasia, and the middle East who only want the rd-tech system used on their boilers and heat exchangers. Special turbines can also purchased from rd-tech for the detecting of cracking of tubes behind the tube sheets. With muliple iris probes in a special shoe we also carry out corrosion mapping on the exterior of super heater tubes .

I have also witnessed the Nurson probe used in cojunction with the rd-tech system with great results in carbon steel tubing heat exchangers as tube "flooding" is not required.

Dear Andre,

It appears you have a pretty solid background in tube inspection using several different techniques. One method you didn't mention was the Laser-Optic Tube Inspection (LOTIS) technique. You may be surprised to find that this technique has twice the resolution of IRIS with approximately twice the inspection speed.

Recently the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Materials Technology Institute (MTI) finalized a Round Robin study which compared seven techniques (ie LOTIS, TC5700, IRIS, MIZ40, STEELTEST, NERASON and the Eagle 2000). This "round robin" was referred to as "Flaw Detection and Characterization in Heat Exchanger Tubing - MTI Project 123". One section of the exam was titled "Flaw Detection Performance by Damage Form, pp 23". LOTIS' outperformed most of the seven techniques for a)Tube Wear/Thinning, b)TSP Wear, c)Pits and d) LPD Flaws. The LOTIS overall score was 85%. IRIS on the other hand scored 69% overall.

It is not strictly IRIS but...

: NUSON a dutch company offers a d/c motor drive with an encoder. This probe has a water jacket sothat the tubes do not have to be flooded. The Nuson probe can also be used with the RD-tech tc5700.

Others have covered most of the variants on the market today. The one missing is often described as Iris with Stairrods form a US Comapny Scanning Systems International. This is a shaft driven turbine without the trigger portion of an IRIS water turbine.It offers full 360 Degree covergae of the tube surface.
