ASME Code Case 2235 Qualification blocks

Could anyone tell me where can I have the UT qualification/demonstration blocks made to ASME Code case 2235? The flaws are supposed to be actual flaws generated by welding.

Dear Friend, as per code case 2235-09 qualification block shall be prepared by welding or HIP and ahll contain 3 flaws( it maybe a diffect or notch/side drilled hole. the diffrence between both calibration and qualification block is, one made just in a plate and other in a welding, also usualy if u make a small thickness qualificatin block during welding u can keep some welding rod inside and weld. also you can keep a RT report for the block. iam sure flaw maybe a natural defect or artificial!!!! always iam making this kind of blocks

Unfortunately, you are not correct in your interpretation. While the original ASME CC 2235 was not clear on this issue, the intent was to use artificial cracks - not side drilled holes or notches - as the reflectors. In addition, the artificial cracks should follow the bevel to simulate Lack of Fusion defects or similar. ASME is currently working on clarifying this situation.

Thanks Michael we are only using code case 2235-09 or asme sec.V for the inspection . sure i did atleast 25 project using the same code and with a normal demo block. if something diffrent come out from ASME we will follow it

Hello, we are working with TOFD inspection procedures following ASME V and VIII and we've a problem with the interpretation of the qualification block's thickness. Could somebody explain us what thickness we must choose for a range of inspection of 25 to 200 mm?

You should read the 2007 Edition of ASME V, Article 4 Mandatory Appendix III, TOFD of welds. Calibration block thickness and range qualified are clearly stated in III-434.

I believe that Appendix III only specifies the CALIBRATION block. For the QUALIFICATION block, Code Case 2235 only requires the three flaws and says very little about the block design. It is up to the Owner to design a qualification/demonstration block specific to their needs.
