Continuous UT Thickness Inspection

Does anyone know of a supplier/source for a UT thickness measurement system that can be permanently installed at a specific location to continuously monitor/document corrosion loss over a period of time. The intended application is on .375" thickness carbon steel ductwork.

Thank you,
Lane Nielson

GE Betz is currently developing this exact service solution for facility piping right now in conjunction with GE Global Research. Please feel free to contact Mel Esmacher with GE Infrastructure in the Woodlands, TX Phone: 281-681-5370 to discuss the current status of this developmental project to see where you can participate.

Kind regards,

Re: Continuous UT Thickness Inspection
It will depend on area you wnat to inspect.

AEA Technology and Rightrax produced a PVDF UT strip for this application monitoring small areas.

Corrocean have a system called FSM or FSM IT.

We provide a system called Octopus which can monitor substantial areas for changes of 0.1 mm or 3 mils.

Hi Lane,
Ideally you would like to continuously monitor over a period of time, but does this cover a substantial area to be monitored?
If so, perhaps a different approach may be appropriate, whereby you remotely monitor a significant area for a wall thinning problem, and when a problem is identified, then you can make an invasive inspection on that specific area.

Is this likely to be under insulation?
Is this likely to be at temperatures above or below ambient?
Is the application in the USA or elsewhere?
Perhaps you could give me some information on this, and we may have a solution, depending on your answer.

Regards,

Godfrey Hands.

Re: Continuous UT Thickness Inspection
FORCE Technology North America has 60+ installations monitoring continous wall los in Canadian and US pipelines.

The FSM (Field Signature Method) is a field proven technique developed more than 10 years ago for monitoring internal corrosion (pitting and general wall loss), erosion and weld cracks. FSM is a non-intrusive corrosion inspection method designed to detect small changes in pipe wall thickness. It involves passing a controlled current through the pipe to establish a unique electric field signature, which is dependent on the pipe geometry and its conductivity. Any subsequent changes in the electrical field (as a result of internal corrosion or erosion), will be detected as a ‘potential drop’ across sensor pins attached to the outside of the pipe. Being a sensitive monitoring method (0.1% of wall thickness for general corrosion and 0.5% for pitting), small changes in metal loss can be detected.

Re: Continuous UT Thickness Inspection
Like others pointed out: it depends on a number of details

In case of Ultrasonics:
Rightrax is a good solution in many cases.
I beleive Karl Deutsch also has developed a system for monitoring
If remote viewing of ultrasonic signals is of interest then consider Ultra_Z see: www.zes.nl
