Just how accurate is lazer scanning on the bore of 1" & 3/4" carbon steel tubing that is severly pitted on the internal surface.

Good Day Andre van Vuuren,

The laser scanning technologies are very accurate when measuring depth and area dimensions of small internal pitting. The laser beams diameter is typically 0.010” (0.25mm) which enables a pit with a area diameter as small as ½ the beam with or 0.005” (0.127mm) to be resolved. The depth measurement accuracy is typically +/-0.002” (0.05mm).

About 5-6 years ago the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Materials Technologies Institute (MTI) did a joint study comparing the LOTIS ‘laser” method to IRIS, ET, MFL, RFET and others. During this study the LOTIS was found to be the superior method on internal pitting in tube diameters between 5/8” (16mm) to 2” (51mm). Many other comparison studies by major oil companies have come up with similar results.

We commonly apply the LOTIS laser technology in tubes with diameter ranging from 5/8” (16mm) and 6” (152mm). If you would like any further details, please feel free to forward the questions.
