Thank´s everybody for your your help on EMAT.

i think Joe's right: the "convencional" way is better because it's well accepted and code approved.

Is there a reliable NDT to inspect a buried pressure vessel without unbury it?

You could use guided waves for cased pipes. Guided waves can be generated from a single position and will travel along the burried cased length. If the pipe is not cased- i.e. in direct contact with soil, the wave attenuation will be much greater.

Yes, if there is a opening large enough for a man to get in (with an air supply line and an electric hand lamp. You can do PT, MT and UT on the inside. Radiography cannot be done without access to the other side.

Hopefully when reaching the decision to bury the vessel the engineers will have taken into account the difficulty of periodic inspection. Perhaps considering its construction, service conditions, corrosion potential a reasoned engineering decision was arrived at that it would not require periodic inspection. Then again maybe they just had a hole dug and dropped it in!!!

Its not just a question of the inspection being difficult, all inspections need to be carefully planned and executed to obtain value. If taken out of service and drained of its contents an inspector can enter under safe work conditions (oxygen measurement), inspect and photograph the condition of the vessel.

It should be considered that design/commisioning engineers will not usually make a decision to bury a vessel which they think liable to damage because of the difficulty of any non-intrusive inspections, the need to remove it from service and drain its contents for internal inspection and the difficulty in carrying out any subsequent required repairs.

The best way forward is for consultation to determine possible damage mechanisms and potential outcomes. Such consultation may dictate an internal inspection and possible repair or the purchase or adaption of a replacement vessel.
