Interesting Use for MT

I found this while doing some research and thought it might be interesting to the community as an unusual use for NDT.

Interesting rearch document but the main report may be even more informative:

Re: Interesting Use for MT
I remember seeing MT used in this fashion on the TV show CSI. And I'm always skeptical of what they show on TV, specially when they deal with a topic that I am familiar with. Very often they stray away from the truth to captivate the audience. Yet I most admit, that after visiting that site and seeing those pictures, I've learned something new today.

Thanks a bunch,

Michel

Re: Interesting Use for MT
If anyone is further interested, please feel free to contact me directly as that work was mine.
I also saw the use of mag particle for forensic recovery on CSI, and the way they implemented the technique really was far fetched and over dramatized for TV. Plus, I look nothing like Marg Helgenberg!

In any case, there are limitations and "tricks" to using this method for serial number recovery, and I'd be happy to discuss this with interested parties. I've used this method to varying degrees of success on firearms and old machinery identification plates.

Re: Interesting Use for MT
Here is another useful trick that not too many people know of. If you are required to examine a non-magnetic weld where the reinforcement has been machined or ground away, and you are not sure of exactly where the weld is, the use of an AC yoke & red powder will usually reveal the toe(s) of the weld rather easily. We use this technique, based on the permiability differences between the base metal and the filler metal, to mark the weld for radiography.

We have been doing Serial number verification for many years now on modified Harley Davidson Motorcycle frames. Typically the WFMPI DC is the most sensitive to residual trace indentations but you have to consider orientation, AC seemed to be just as effective in most cases. Usually we are doing this at the request of a potential buyer who doesn't trust the seller or occasionally we have had the insurance companies ask us to verify if the frame under claim is hasn't been switched. I have not seen any requests in the last couple years though - maybe different serializing techniques nowadays or smarter crooks?
