Radiography of Tubes with Source on Tubes

Does anyone have any information on a radiographic technique in which the source is placed onto the tube surface. Types of tubes are 2" OD, I believe the technique uses an Iridium source with a strength of 5 curies or less.

Any info on sensitivity, or who uses such a technique?

Some years ago we used this technique on a nuclear piping job. The tiny Ir 192 source was so small we could actually perform panoramic shots and still meet Ug requirements. 2-2T was no problem.
How thick is the wall of these tubes?

Tube thicknesses vary from 3.4mm in reheater to 9.5mm in the final stage superheater.

Our local NDT companies have source sizes of 2mmx2mm, and 3mmx3mm Iridium.

I regards to your question, you must first determine to which code, or to what specification you are to be in compliance with. ASME generaly requires anything below 3.5" od to be radiographed using a superimposed or eliptical technique. On the other end of the spectrum Gas piping code has essentially the same requirement. Most codes make provision for the engineer to approve alternate techniques, but in general you are going to want the smallest physical source that you can get. Hope some of this helps.
