Notification of New Forum Members

Dear Forum Member,

A new forum feature notifies via email when new forum members signed up.
I have received a couple of complains that this new feature may not be necessary
and overlades the number of messages that are being received.
I personally thought that it would be a welcome information.
What is your opinion?

Best regards
Rolf Diederichs

Re: Notification of New Forum Members
What should it be good for. In the last days my mailbox was spammed with lots of notifications of the ndt.net which immediately went into trash. For what must I know about who has just decided to join the forum. If I am interested to see who is member I can do it by looking for the appropriate link in ndt.net.
But such automatic mail disturbs my normal mail traffic which is already really huge.
For me this service is spam.

Re: Notification of New Forum Members
I personally exchanged information because of new member announcement. But I agree that for members who receive mails all day as institution/company directors it is necessary to filter mail. However, I do not consider new member notification as spam

A single e-mail once a month indicating the new members should be sufficient for most users.
An e-mail for each new user is excessive.

I would have to agree with Dent McIntyre's conmment - it does not add value, and is information that can easily be found by looking into the list of new members

: Both opinions are valid. Being aware of new members is welcomed information, and increasing e-mail traffic is becoming a problem. Rolf, as a compromise solution, would it be possible to combine notices of new members into a single e-mail each week, or when a total of 10 occurs, whichever occurs first? Thanks.

This is already available on the NDTnet forum page. It lists the new members for the previous 30 days. At least that way, folk that are not so interested don't have to keep receiving "unwanted" e-mails, but the information is there for those who do.

Rolf,
The questions and answers are most enjoyable and informative. Based on the traffic this post has generated I will go with the crowd, once a month new member postings would be adequate.

It is initially a good thought ... however upon receiving several days of new members it is cumbersome and should at least be an optional feature.

Re: Notification of New Forum Members
Rolf, I enjoy learning of new forum members. It is nice to see who is joining the forum and from which part of the world they are lending their comments, suggestions and expertise. I am sometimes surprised to see an old colleague's name with whom I haven't had contact for a while! It helps me to remember them again and it also helps to update any old coordinate information I may not have changed. I like the service and I thank you for it. For the cynics who insist that this service is not useful, I do believe that they can use their "delete" button and allow the rest of us to benefit from the notification.

personally, i don't want to get any announcements of
new members. put it on the web site: "New Members"
and be done with it. In fact i am sure that no one
even wants to get any emails discussing this anymore!

thanks.

Hello Rolf,

I also intended to write to you that this is not critical information.
Anyone can look at the members at his own free time and it quite
bothers to receive it through messages.

Re: Notification of New Forum Members
Rolf,
I personally would prefer not to see these messages.
Perhaps once per month (or every two weeks) a message giving name and
country of new members, and we can then look at membership list if we
want to.

Yes, it is easy to delete, however, our mail server is already stretched enough without this type of doubling of information. The new members link on the NDTnet Forum page is more than sufficient.
