Analysis of contact patches with pulse-echo method

Hello,

i tried to apply a classic "pulse-echo" method to study
shape and dimensions of contact patches between rail
and wheel

Using a model (Krolikowski, 1992) I was able to calculate
amount of REAL contact area, which is a few part of nominal
(about 30% for a 400 MPa nominal pressure applied)

This is a graphical output (check the attached URL)

There is someone who perform similar analysis?

You can very precisely see the contact areas using the method, that we are using in our ultrasonic camera for the fingerprints (see the paper in the may ndt journal or on our page).
We have made many experiments with a contact of two bodys (with many materials). The results are very good. I think, it would be easy to adapt this principle for you experiments.
