high speed rail inspection

hi everyone,

i'm currently doing research on rail inspection and was wondering
if there any technology available for detecting cracks at high
speed?? (150-200 miles/hr).

I would say that eddy current should be top of the list. The other techniques are going to be too slow.

Advantages
Inspection speed limited by response of front end. We have tested in copper rod mills at 60mph
Signal coupling efficiency is reliable.
Disadvantage
Surface breaking defects only.

Hi Ken,
DB (the German Railways) operates for the last 4 years a high speed rail inspection system from ScanMaster (see details at www.scanmaster-irt.com)
The system is up to 100Km/Hr and resolution of defect is 6.0 mm.
There are several phisical limitations by increasing the speed above this limit.
