X Ray for 2" thickness pipeline

our next project is 2" thickness offshore pipeline , we need to applly ndt to the welds , shall X Ray be able to inspect the welds or we need another method , i have J.M.E crawler .

For this kind of thicknesses x-ray is not suitable. Conventional x-ray tubes cannot produce energies sufficiently high for useful radiographies of welding defects (theoretically, a linear accelerator could do the job, but will not fit onto a crawler and is way too large and expensive to be handled outside any dedicated facility). You would need something like a Co60 source, but this is not suitable regarding safety. The conventional Ir192 source (with lower energy) could theoretically meet the testing quality requirements (maybe), but would take a rather long exposure time and is therefore unlikely to be economical.
Even if you could qualify a radiography test in this case, the weld will comprise many layers in which small flaws can hide that will not be detected by radiography.
In most cases these kind of welds are examined by means of ultrasonics, like the RTD Rotoscan system. It is fast and produces the information required for proper testing for flaws like slag inclusions, lack of fusions and root flaws. The pulse-echo mode can be combined with Time of Flight testing in the same run. This technique is qualified for all major Pressure codes, on- and offshore likewise.

Wall thickness of 2" is very substantial. If this is
the real thickness then automated UT will be cheaper,
faster, more sensitive, and safer than any X-Ray
or Gamma-Ray crawler.

Take a look at http://www.inspection.co.uk or
http://www.force.dk for info on 'P_scan System 4'
and 'P-scan 4 Lite' systems.

Remember that you'll need fully trained and
experienced technicians to get the best out of any
automated UT system.

You can also check on the R/D Tech web site and look for more information on the Phased Array Pipe Wizard system. It is the most advanced system available fpr automated UT and the use of Phased Arrays may reduce the number of probes (in this case) by a factor of 10!

Re: X Ray for 2" thickness offshore pipeline
OTISLAB has complete facilities for NDT testing for various requirements. If you could let us know ID, OD, it will be easy to decide extact technique and equipment cababilities. We hope you will understand implication of incorrect details.
