Phased Array on Hastelloy/ Inconel

What could be the best approach to inspection Hastelloy with Phased Array. Do you think an L-wave inspection with phased array would be good or shear wave?

Vikram,

It all depends on the grain size. Shear waves may work as we demosntrated for the Yucca Mtn project with the Waste Packages. But, usually a refracted L-wave is best for penetraion through the weld metal.

If you can determine the grain size that would be very helpful with your decision of Shear versus L wave.

Or, you would want to build a weld test sample with known volumetric flaws as well as ID and OD defects or notches in the HAZ in order to verify detectability and penetration through the weld metal.

If this is a UT in lieu of RT, then your procedure qualification sample will dictate your performance demonstration process.

Davis NDE is currently conducting a Basic and an Advanced Phased Array Classes for Mistras in the Denver area. You may contact your people there to see about this using the PA methodlogy and speak with my instructor or contact me directly.

Of course you will need RL PA Wedges. If you are using the OmniScan, then contact Olympus to acquire the RL wedges.

Also, 5 Mhz worked great for the Hastalloy with Yucca Mountain Waste Packages, but you may need to consider a 2 Mhz or even a 1 or 1.5 Mhz. You do not mention thickness or diameter.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

J. Mark Davis

Mark,

Thank you for the prompt reply. The work I am trying to target is 4" diameter, 0.250" pipe weld. Obviously, I will have to inspect on second leg and I will set up a linear raster scan with an 8 element aperture and hence be able to get some footprint on the scan. Sectorial will be setup as a second multigroup. I have asked the customer for a microstructure analysis on the material although the weld micro-structure might be different and hence the acoustic mismatch which might throw me off. The wedges will be curved. Let me know what you think.

Regards,

Vikram
