lifting eyepad inspection

hi to all,
which one is the best inspection method to inspect LIFTING EYE PAD. thanks for reply in advance. while lifting in our workshop eye pad was broken in eye pad base metal and fracture surface is very bright like brittle material. the load was 300tons. thankyou

I guess the minimum you could do is Dye Penetrant Test or Magnetic Particles Inspection to ensure that no cracks has been initiated.

Dear Gowri,

Pneumatic Test is done world wide for Lifting Lugs Pad and WFMT with DC Yoke is good practice to ensure a good weld,
Lifting Lug Pads are most likely to have laminar tearing to avoid such laminar tearing you should properly grind the weld cap edges. And also grind the sharp edges (Edges which are not properly fused with the shell body) of the pad weld.

Its a matter of risk assessment base don load and criticality of what you are lifting on the pad eye.
Next is compliance with any regulatory requirements - be careful these may not be in your normal inspection codes but lifting or generic safety rules.
High risk - high consequence - design welds correctly and apply an appropriate NDE method RT/UT plus MT as applicable.
lastly load test the pad eye is often required for critical lifts.
Periodic recertification amy also be required.

Cause of the padeye failure may just beyond the use of correct NDT method(s). As John said, depending on the criticality of the lift, the risk assessment based on load for proper design, local regulatory requirements, qualification and compliance of weld procedures, NDT methods are required.
The following checks may help:
1) Proper engineering design such as sufficient thickness of the pad plates, weld size etc.,
2) Welding procedure parameters are stricktely adhered such as electrode baking, preheating, interpass temperature, interpass cleaning etc.,
3) Final weld visual inspection for sufficient fillet size, other discontinuities such as overlap, unterdcut (stress risers) etc.,
4) Magnetic Particle Examination would be sufficient in most cases for the fillet welds. However, lamination check by UT, and MT on welding edges before welding may help as well.

In cases where people tend to under estimate the criticality of the padeyes and lifting lugs, as these are only going to be used once (or seldom) in many cases.

Is there a legislation in regards to Lifting Lugs testing in Ontaio- Canada, if there is what is the legislation and and what kinfd of testing is required.

Gursharn,

Yes there is a standard of inspection for lifting devices in Ontario, many of them. It all depend on what you are using to do the lift.

Ansar Akhtar,

Yes there area standard for the fabrication of lifting eyes. Which one? This will depends on where you live or intend to use them.

The lifting Pad eyes are designed for critical working load,
Welding on these padeyes is full penetration ‘T’ connection exerting maximum shear load during working.
This weld joint shall be inspected as category ‘A’…
Following can be considered for ITP to cover the required NDT for this critical weld;
• MPI of edge preparation
• UT of all part for lamination check with normal beam probe
• MPI after back gauging
• MPI of intermediate weld layer (if possible)
• MPI after completion of weld
• UT after completion of weld

NDT level III shall provide the UT procedure with scan plan for approval. This UT needs a special mock-up block of same material, dimensions & welding process & shall have known reflectors at the fusion zones.

Regards,
Milind Darje
