There should not be many (if any) metallurgy questions in either of those exams - its at 3rd level that a reasonable level of knowledge is expected. And as the exam format is multi-choice (1 right option from 4 or 5) you should be able to discount a 2 or 3 options and then hazard a damned good guess at the remaining 2 options. And if you choose the wrong one, ion a 40 question exam paper you have lost just 2.5%.

However I am all for knowledgable inspectors so here are my 2 recommendations and a bonus:

Google Books has Harry Chandlers "Metallurgy for the non-metallurgist. You can read a good percentage of it on-line for free. OK so you miss some pages but more is on there than is excluded.

If you want a book in your hand then got to http://www.bindt.org/Content.asp?ProdCatID=1&ProdID=16 for Dr Taylor's "Basic Metallurgy for NDT". You cant go wrong with this for just £20!

The bonus is not pure metallurgy but two excellent engineering reads which can be picked up for $10 or less from Amazon are J E Gordon's "New Science of Strong Materials " and "Structures - or why we dont fall through the floor". These should be required reading for everybody concerned with material quality and structural integrity and such fascinating reads as an introduction to materials science with so little maths. The man is a genius educator and polymath who touches on art, history and dress-making on the path to enlightening the layman!

Enjoy your studies and your enthusiam will surely get you through those exams!
