DGS the simple way

Its been a while since I last used the DGS system for lamination examination of steel plate. Does anyone have a simple explanation of how to go about it. ( an idiots guide)

If you have a equipment with DGS option, define the reflector type to Back Wall Echo and take the BWE. Thats it.

If you don´t have the DGS option, then you need the printed DGS- curves for your probe. Calibration is similar.

Thanks Toni, trouble is that I don't have a digital set just the old analog, so I really need a step by step guide.

If you don't have a digital set then you MUST have the appropriate curves for the transducer you are using, preferably in the form of a scale for your set.

DGS is a great system, used properly, If you don't use it properly the results can be worse than useless, even with a digital set, In particular, You do need to understand how to compensate for the transfer correction and the material attenuation (which can be significant, especially in shear wave tests) If you don't have the right numbers for this (and for the probe) you wont get the right results.

The Best guide i've come across aimed at technicians is in John Drury's book , Published by Silver Wing, available from them, or from BINDT, as well as many other sources. Its probably still not completely what you are looking for though.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the reply, I do have a copy of John Drury's book, I'll have to dig it out.
Cheers

One point I should add is that if the material to be tested is such that you can use it as a calibration piece (which a piece of plate might well be if it is thick enough that the back surface is out of the near field zone) then the transfer loss can be ignored, and For compression wave testing the material attenuation may also be low enough to ignore.

ISAFE3 Intrinsically Safe Sensor System

ISAFE3 intrinsically safe sensor system of Vallen Systeme is especially targeted at the petrochemica
...
l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
