Weld joint configurations according to ASME B&PV

Where can I find a listing of the various weld joint configurations that are used by the Boiler and Pressure Vessel code? So far, I've only been able to find joint configurations in B31.3, but these only cover a handful of welds, and skip double-vee welds entirely.

More specifically, can anyone tell me the dimensions and angles for a double-vee welded half-inch thick steel plate? How big is the root face (land), what is the spacing, etc.

B31.3. is piping code so unlikely to find double-vee - Api 1104 maybe, but neither are part of BPV.

i assume you are required to examine weld for which you have no profile info. which should appear on any drawing or WPS. At 12,7mm w.t. that only leaves 6,3mm either side of the root, so if you draw the cap width and allow 1mm root face, 1mm root gap you wont be far out for UT purposes anyway by dwg the prep faces in.

David

these details are contained in the PQR / WPS and are considered essential variables. Any change requires the requalification of the welding procedure. Details such as root gap, included angle and "land should be there.

Cheers
Collin

ASME does not specify all possible joint configurations thats why you cannot find them. You should be inspecting to a procedure which should include these details which are derived from the approved WPS that was used to make the welds. If its an in-service inspection of an old weld where you cannot trace the WPS use the assumptions identified earlier.
