The OlympusNDT CDS-7t is a great tool to have in your UT Toolbox. It should be coupled with a transducer that is appropriate for the inspection your are attempting. If you want to learn to use this type of probe/wedge combination, I suggest Mark J. Davis (University of Ultrasonics) crack detection course. They will teach you the methods associated with the creeping wave technique as well as other complimentary techniques.

Good Luck!

No, the OmniScan MX is relatively bug-free these days. The very early versions had some issues, as do most first generation instruments, but we seem to be running well these days.

If you have problems, contact your Olympus rep or some other expert like one of the training companies for help.

Although this is an old thread, I was recently looking for information about this wedge style myself. I came across a summary by Olympus (Russ Minkwitz) that you may find useful:

nresolved asset integrity problem in the industry. Current methods for measuring wall thickness with liftoff, without removing insulation, all have severe limitations. Eddyfi introduces Lyft — a reinvented, high-performance pulsed eddy current (PEC) solution. The patent- pending system features a state-of-the-art portable instrument, real- time C-scan imaging, fast data acquisition with grid-mapping and dynamic scanning modes, and flexibility with long cables. It can also scan through thick metal and insulation, as well as aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized steel weather jackets. Who else but Eddyfi to reinvent an eddy current technique and redefine CUI programs. Got Lyft?
