pipeline NDT inspection methods others than intrusive pig inspection

Dear Sirs

In our pipeline to the harbour, we have already done 100% visual inspection and manual UT. At the moment, to establish a true base line, we want to do a more reliable and conservative NDT testing.

Based on our pipeline description below we want to know, what are pipeline NDT inspection methods others than intrusive pig inspection to perform the job and how long it takes to accomplish such a work?

Our pipe way is composed by 14 straight lines 5,5Km length. In some points we have expansion loops with elbows. There are lines painted with an inorganic zinc primer plus an amine Epoxy 150u total thickness, other lines are painted with an alkyd red lead 80u. 36" and 30" lines are thermal insulated with rock wool and aluminium weatherproofing, the insulation has 50mm thickness, and these lines are steam heat traced. 10" Butane line is thermal insulated with 50mm of polyurethane. The lines have welded supports that are lying over concrete sleepers.

The forum answer will be appreciated.

Luis Marques.

A good approach may be to use Long Range Ultrasonics to screen substantial lengths of the pipeline. This would highlight areas requiring focussed NDE.

A broader approach maigh be a Risk Assessment comlemented by selected long range UT and then definitive inspection of identified fault areas.

Another alternative is EMAT screening of the pipe in those areas where the technique is suitable.

other alternatives could be magnetic methods and guided wave ultrasound.

I also recommend to use long-range guided wave testing (GWT) for screening the pipeline. GWT is cost effective and can quickly screen long length of pipeline. If your pipeline includes geometric features such as pipe support, clamp, spacer, or wire tie, please use high-frequency guided wave that reduces the interaction of guided wave with attached geometric features. For learning more about this, please refer to this website ( http://www.gwanalysis.com/guided_wave_pipe_inspection.html ) or (http://www.ndt.net/forum/thread.php?admin=&forenID=1&msgID=32591&rootID=32547#32591).
If you know the resolution difference with 1 MHz, 2.25 MHz, 5 MHz, and 10 MHz transducers in UT inspection, you will realize that the high-frequency (frequency range between 100 kHz to 300 kHz) GWT is much better resolution in finding small defects than low-frequency (usually less than 50 kHz) GWT. High-frequency GWT has longer inspection range with high resolution than that of low-frequency GWT for a pipeline having many geometric features.

Dear Luis, as everybody said LRUT is the best method for this kind of pipeline, but you need to provide a good support with Manual UT, Pipeline with continues Welded support, Loops and Thick Coat Painting(External and Internal) not really good for LRUT, same like all other Inspections. 150 Micron thick external painting is ok. but most of the harbour line with high sludge/deposit inside will reduce your test range as well as quality of the inspection. Always reliable LRUT in this kind of piping inspection.

An idea would be to use Long Range Guided Waves for long term monitoring of your pipelines. Considering that you need anyway to remove the insulation in the locations where you'll install GW probes (over small areas though), it would be a good idea to install special probes that let you monitor that pipeline. This way, next time you won't have to remove insulation anymore, except for critical areas detected by GW monitoring.

an alternative are the MEC (Magnetic Eddy Current) scanner systems (top side & subsea). a fast scanning with high resolution corrosion mapping externally and internally.
Typical speed 0.2m/sec., sensitive detecting small volumetric pitting and size it.
The scanners are used for coated subsea pipeline, riser, caisson and conductor inspection. Data prepared and direct transferred to an FFS system .

Let me know if interested in more information a.boenisch@innospection.com

Another possible inspection technique which can be applied for ranges without aluminium weatherproofing is so-called AGIT (Above-Ground Inspection Technique) which can detect inner and outer metal loss faults. The inspection speed is about 1 m in 40 s, the pipeline range under test must be connected at the start and end positions to a special generator providing an AC test current into the pipeline. The inspection tool measures the outer AC magnetic field induced by the test current at different frequencies. The product transportation mode must not be stopped or even changed during the inspection.
