Crack Detection in Pipes Using Sh

To the Memebers of the Forum:
I appreciate this opportunity to obtain some input from an illustrious group of scientists, enginees and business persons.
My name is Tim Janis and my company ARAC was formed in 1963 as NASA’s first technology
transfer center and was operated by Indiana University until 1991. In January,
1992 the center was privatized as ARAC, Inc. The company specializes in adding
value to information.

We currently have a project with a research center whereby we are trying ascetain the state-of-the-art of horizontal polarized shear waves technology. Our particular interest is in the application of the technology to crack detection in piplines.
I would be most appreciative of any input you could provide about avaialable technology, relevant R&D, expertise, etc. We have conducted a literature search but know that the most current information is in the minds of experts like you.

Hi,

We are an engineering and systems manufacturing company specializing in the
development and marketing of advanced nondestructive inspection equipment,
development of new leading edge inspection technologies and in providing
safety and reliability engineering services. We at Tektrend develop and
offer fully automated inspection systems based on Horizontal shear waves
using EMAT probes. We use guided and bulk horizontal shear waves with such
systems.

Horizontal shear waves provide a number of significant advantages over
conventional ultrasonic waves, which make them attractive to inspect with.
They do not suffer mode conversion at interface that increases their
penetrating power and beam concentration since their energy is not lost in
the conversion process. Absence of mode conversion also enhances signal
quality since the reflected signals are not converted and encumbered with
the noise of parasitic signals. The total absence of the normal particle
displacement component produces non-excessive coupling of their ultrasonic
energy to the inspected media. Recently, I presented two papers
demonstrating some of the results obtained with Horizontal shear waves:
