Gamma Shot of a Celtic Cross

A historical society in Ireland have a Celtic Cross which is
14 inches in diameter and made of sandstone. They want to know
if it has been pinned during its construction and would like
to take a Gamma Ray Radiograph. The only source available
at the moment is Ird 192 16 ci. My money says it won't have
sufficient penetrating power. Does anyone have any experience
on shooting Sandstone ? Or any idea of other ndt tests that
could achieve the same result. Sounds like its a job for
the concrete testing boys.

It depends on material and size of the suspected pin.

Ultrasound: To detect a metal pin of 10 mm diameter in a depth of 180 mm you need specialised concrete-testing, pulse echo equipment. Looks possible if surface is o.k., and if there are no internal cracks.

Other possibilities seem to be x-rays, gamma rays, radar, and maybe even a less costly cover meter (used for reinforced concrete): please asks experts in these fields.

You could try Ground Pentetrating Radar (GPR) to determine if it the Celtic Cross was pinned.
