The most reliable corrosion inspection method is ultrasonic measurement, and it is quantitative. But for isolated and random corrosion internally this method can easily miss significant corrosion. So in our experience the combination of a reliable screening technique (semi-quantitative) combined with ultrasonic evaluation (quantitative) and the best screening technology is SLOFEC...combination of electromagnetic and eddy current technology. SLOFEC is very effective for the detection of internal corrosion, and to focus the UT measurements.

Pitch-Catch guided waves using two EMAT sensors is a very good alternative. The sensors are positioned straddling the pipe (or on a tank) and scan the pipe along its axis measuring changes in amplitude and TOF caused by corrosion or other defects. It permits inspection under supports without having direct access to the pipe. The advantage over LRUT is that it can use much higher frequencies and provide better resolution and sensitivity (x10 in some cases). for piping you can use LRUT, MFL or EMAT. for tanks and vessels acoustic emission, C scan or MFL Crawlers.
