material testing

Members
What standard do you use for checking the elemental composition of stainless steels. What ranges for the different elements. I want to have a document that confirms what PMI or the MTR's give me.

thank you for your reply

There are many standards for elemental analysis. Most of them depend on spectrography, XRF etc. for the main alloying elements and special equipment for Carbon and Sulphur (combustion based methods). Vacuum Emission Spectrometers provide almost a one-stop solution for most of the commercial austenitic stainless steels.

Confirmation of PMI (which is done mostly by Shop floor portable spectroscopy and or XRF) is done using the laboratory VES as mentioned above or wet chemical methods in case of border results.
