lap joint inspection method

Dear Sir,

I have a lap joint which is a stainless steel material grade SS304
with 1.85mm wall thickness and round surface of diameter 23mm
Exisiting manufacturer use Penetrant Testing for detect the crack for
this lap joint. Question is that any other method we can use instead
of PT method.

kind of small diameter, is it a pipe to pipe lap joint? Perhaps you can consider leak testing as well.

Dear Lk,

Attached is the photo for lap joint.Customer are use PT for detect crack.They are looking for other method for crack detection.Thanks in an advance for your advise.

I have try with ET but the pencil probe contact surface are very small to detect surround the lap joint is very unconvenience.

Could you please send me a photo (or graph) of the lap joint. I'm interested to test this with infrared thermography (IRT). We have done similar works to detect the cracks.

We would not normally call something like this a lap joint.
Looks more like a socket weld or partial penetration weld.

I think PT is your best choice.
Why do you want to use something else?

this looks like a slip on flange welded to a pipe stub. If this is the case, looking at the UT couplant in the photo, you are looking from the wrong surface and should be testing from the flange side.
You are quoting 1.85mm wall, so PT for cracks would be more than sufficient. If you are looking for lack of penetration, a right angled pencil probe from the inside bore should do the trick.

Dear Win Hoo Sir,

U Have SS304 material, i seen the photograph of that lap joint and the penetrant testing is the best way to detect the surface cracks for this job, if u r presently testing this job by visible method and u r not getting anything then to get more sensitivity go for fluorescent method might be u got something. Still if u don't want to go with PT no matter, u can try MT if the opening of your job is like flange means hollow from inside u can try central conductor method either u go for head shot . . .

Your suggestion about PT is ok.

But your suggestion for MT on SS 304 material may not be a good one. This is a paramagnetic steel in normal condition. It is assumed that the filler material used is of matching composition.

This steel has a permeability of about 1 to 1.02 (Some claims go up to 1.43) in annealed condition. This is to be weighed against a permeability no. of about 200 to 800 for mild steels.

When Austenitic steels are work hardened some micro structural changes take place. Some of the austenite converts into martensite and imparts magnetic properties to the steel. But even if this particular part was work hardened by about 30% the permeability does not go up beyond 1.5 (This figure also slightly varies, some claims go up to 3.1). In view of this Still this is not a fit case for MT.

Even if it is considered that due to welding, some amount of delta ferrite is generated ( up to 5 to 8 % which is much more than the content in annealed condition) the permeability still remains to be grossly inadequate for meaningful MT.
