TO DETERMINE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF EXISTING TIMBER PILES

WE WOULD LIKE TO DETERMINE THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF EXISTING TIMBER PILES.
WHAT ARE THE TEST METHODS AVAILABLE TO DETERMINE THE SAME?
DO WE NEED TO TAKE THE CORE SAMPLE TO EVALUATE THAT?

.
Does "existing" mean that these piles are already buried in the ground?
In this case test loading might give you the realistic bearing capacity.
