detecting hard objects

how can laundry be inspected to detect the presence of forgotten 'hard' objects [pens, lighters, pocketknives, keys, watches etc.]in the pockets before going into the wash? will ultrasound work? all ideas welcome. thanks for any inputs.

Have you tried radiography? Use a system that is like passing your luggage through an airport detector. Then all you need to look at is the density of the object to determine the "hardness" of it.

This is only a quick observation, many techniques will work but if you are looking for something fast this will do the trick.

Hi Jamie,
i don't think that conventional NDT techniques will be really cost effective in a laundry situation.
However, perhaps a "metal detector" will suffice. These can be bought from some hobby outlets for a reasonable sum (perhaps GB Pounds 40 to 50 or US$ 60 to 80), and may prove to be suitable.

I doubt that ultrasound would work. An alternative approach may be monitoring for impact noise caused by the objects. Acoustic Emission is used for detecting foreign obstacles circulating in Nuclear Plant Systems,sand particle impact in Oil& Gas production and differential sound in food mixing systems. So you may want to explore that avenue.
