UT limitations on welded SS thermowells

Good day,
What are the practical limitations of UT examination on stainless steel thermowells? Pipe dimensions and flange ratings range but a common size would be approximately a 1.25” OD, .225” wall thickness on the pipe and a 2” 600# flange (approx 1”thick) with 4 to 8 bolt holes, raised face on one side. Weld prep is double J.
Is there a procedure that can satisfy the requirements of ASME B31.3 Normal? The grain boundaries appear to be interrupting shear wave inspection and the bolt holes limit the coverage that a compression wave can manage.

S'hydratent do UT? This is low operating pressure. How about PT on both side, so each weld and call it a day!

Unfortunately it is a full penetration weld which they require full examination.

A weld scan with shear wave is not possible on SS welds. High angle compression probes may get through but the tooling contours on the sealing face will inhibit the scanning from this surface. You could use a 0 degree from the edge of the flange, but the bolt holes will restrict coverage. Also the stamps on the edge of the flange will need to be smoothed off before scanning. PT the well to flange weld on both sides is the way to go.

You can do first leg refracted longitudinal beam sectorial phased array. You would need to do it from both sides of the flange in order to get your coverage.

I would mock up the joint and put calibration reflectors in the root, both fusion faces, especially at the extremities of your scans. Adjust your sensitivity accordingly, and pay attention to where your refracted shear beam reflectors are in the part.

why not set it up like an imersion job. make up a jig and insert probe into the well and test from that way, watch out for water path. Follow up with PT as others have suggested

this works!
The thicknesses variables under the probe regulate the height of water in order to allow an input 'clean' without geometric secondary reflections due to the exterior of the weld bead.
Using a sample welded with the same dimensions of the piece to be checked and inserted inside reflectors, must define practically modes: probe (focused or not, frequency, diameter) and height of water for the probe in use (modulated with the thin sheet placed under the probe).
A variation in the angle of flat mirror metal can vary the angle of entry into the flange.
Once achieved the optimum operating conditions remove the sample from the ring, put in its place the workpiece to be checked, and rotates the tube 360 to control 100% of the welding.
Really fast!

I would love to see an ASME procedure for IRIS flaw detection and classification for weld volume/fusion flaws.

It is thinking out of the box for sure, but it might be easier said than done.

PS...Our company owns a few different variations of this sort of equipment, but we only use it for corrosion/erosion of tubular materials.

I have tried this very thing using IRIS but did not have sufficient time to finalize my results. I will be receiving my IRIS equipment tomorrow and will be more than happy to assist with this application. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist. I have been performing IRIS for 5 years now. Also, I am working on developing a probe that would lend itself very useful for this application. It will not be complete for awhile but if we could find extra funding we could expedite the development and make it a commercial product.
