Differential Capacitance?

Can anyone point me to some introductory information on how to use (and the basic knowledge behind) differential capacitance sensors? I'm specifically interested in using them for crack-assessment of pipes. Please email me at: russ@ieee.org

Russ, I am not sure what exactly you want to measure
and especially what dimensions the pipes are but if you
want to experiment around a bit maybe this simple
setup would work:

If you use something like this it is essential to keep
those diodes as balanced as possible (temp etc.).

Differential Capacitance?
Differential capacitance sensors according to information are suitable for thickness measurement and not crack measurement. However laser based techniques can do so. Please check and revert to me at caltech@vsnl.net
